Waterwatch Adelaide

Waterwatch is a water quality monitoring initiative established in 1992 through which people in the community are actively involved in monitoring the health of local waterways and catchments.

In the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges region, Waterwatch was run by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board through the NRM Education program.

The Waterwatch program in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges region has now been replaced by the Engaging with Nature program, which expands upon the water monitoring activities to also include terrestrial monitoring and taking action components.

This website is currently only being maintained as a warehouse for the large range of historical resources that were developed to support the Waterwatch program. If updated or new resources are developed by the NRM Education program to support Engaging with Nature and other education and community action for sustainability, the old resources will be removed from this site. The new resources can be found on the main NRM Education website.

The Importance Of Wetlands

Wetlands are among the most important and productive ecosystems on Earth, providing habitat, water and an abundant food source for a diverse range of animals including birds, frogs, invertebrates and fish. Wetlands become refuge areas for plants and animals in times of drought and are nurseries for fish and migratory bird populations. As water travels slowly through a wetland, a number of different processes occur which help to improve water quality and the overall health of a catchment area.

In the past, most wetlands were viewed as wastelands and were often reclaimed for farming, housing and other land uses. Today we understand the vital functions of wetlands and better appreciate their environmental, social and economic value and significance. Governments and communities all over the world are involved in wetland management, conservation, restoration and construction projects.
Wetland environments have a variety of important functions in natural and urban areas including:

Significant Wetlands in South Australia

The Australian Conservation Council, in collaboration with Commonwealth and State Governments, created A Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia (1993). Of the 520 nationally important sites, 43 were in South Australia . By 2001 the directory expanded to recognise 851 wetlands, with 69 of those in South Australia . Significant Wetlands around the World

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an international treaty adopted in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. Its broad aims are ‘to halt the worldwide loss of wetlands and to conserve, through wise use and management, those that remain’. There are currently 1369 wetlands around the world, protected by the Ramsar convention, and more are being added. What is an aquatic macroinvertebrate?

Aquatic is another word for water. The macroinvertebrates in this section are the ones that spend some or all of their lives in fresh water. Macro means they are big enough to see with your eyes, and an invertebrate is an animal without a backbone. Some are soft and squishy, some have a hard skeleton on the outside of their body and others live in shells!

Aquatic macroinvertebrates range from insects and crustaceans to molluscs and worms, and are a vital part of the food chain in aquatic and terrestrial environments. They help to break down leaves, bark and twigs that fall into the water, and can even change their environments by moving soil, sand or pebbles around. Scientists can use the number and types of aquatic macroinvertebrates in a waterway to determine how healthy it is.

Why Directional Drilling is Impossible without these machines

In drilling, the equipment for creating holes into rock can vary greatly. Some require directional drilling, while others are powered by power drills that must be manually operated or electric motors. The use of hands has been around for hundreds of years and has been an effective way to cut through the material because it allows a more natural feel to the process.

There are several different types of tools used in drilling, including mechanical drills, rotary drills, wedges, battery drills, Sanders, and other attachments, and battery drills that are used by military personnel. Of these, three types will be discussed here: mechanical drills, rotary drills, and electric motors.

Rotary drills are used primarily for drilling into porous materials such as masonry, concrete, limestone, and sandstone. As the name implies, they work in a circular motion rather than vertical movement, meaning that they must use longer strokes and more strokes to penetrate deeply into the material. Rotary drills require tools that have a standard drill bit.

Since there is no one particular type of tool for drilling into porous materials, there are various shapes and sizes of motors for this specific type of drill. They range from battery-powered drills to diesel-powered drills. The battery and diesel drills are also used for digging underground, although the battery version will not be as powerful as a diesel-powered drill.

While a motor uses electricity to make the drill rotate, a drill must be connected to a drill bit to work. Because of this, the drill bit must be made out of a material that can withstand the extreme vibrations of the motor being used to power it. Most drill bits are made out of stainless steel, but some of them are made out of aluminium, titanium, iron, and copper.

A drill is mounted on a platform, and then a guide rod can be used to position the hole to be drilled. This is called a drilling attachment. Using two accessories will work best.

When a hole is made, the drill goes to full revolution, which means that it starts at one end and ends at the other. As the exercise moves down into the ground, it creates more holes in the rock. Once the drilling is done, a hammer can be used to complete the hole.

The tools used in drilling will also vary with each company that does underground drilling. Different companies use different sized drills, as well as various types of drills. Depending on the need, there will be different types of tools used.

It is essential to know the specifications for different size drills. For example, a smaller hole can take a more significant diameter drill bit than a giant ditch, so some companies may be using a bore size of 1.5 inches, while others are drilling holes of a much larger diameter. The general rule of thumb is that the larger the hole, the larger the drill bit needs to be, and vice versa.

Some of the tools that are required for drilling include such things as jigs, motors, hands, mounting devices, line-lock, air compressors, power drills, drill bits, and other related tools. When all of these tools are needed for underground drilling, the amount of drilling will depend on the size of the hole and the equipment needed.

Drill bits for hand-drilled holes will need to be deeper and more robust. This is because there will be very little friction when drilling, and a hard-hitting drill bit will be necessary. Most drilling will require digging into concrete, and drilling into masonry, but drilling into sandstone is common as well. Hard stone can often snap the head of the drill due to the amount of heat created during the drilling process which weakens the metal. Keeping a second backup drill will prevent costly downtime while construction equipment repairs the broken machinery. 

There are many varied types of drilling machines, and the types of drilling equipment are regularly changing. Every type of drilling will require a different kind of drill bit, and the type of drill bit that is needed will depend on the kind of hole that is being drilled. Digging can be done by using manual labour, by electric motors, by high-powered diesel-powered drills, or drills powered by battery power, and by surface drilling.
