Tree Removal Techniques

Homeowners plant trees to improve the aesthetics of their property. Trees not only blossom beautiful, colourful flowers and foliage but they also help create shade and improve the air. Moreover, adding hedge trees can improve the boundary and security of your property.

But there are times when a tree becomes a safety hazard. If heavy storms or rains have weakened a tree and it’s prone to fall, it’s best to call a tree removalist at the earliest. A professional will carefully and safely remove the tree whilst avoiding damage and injuries to people and properties.

Three distinct types of processes are used for tree removal: clear-felling, sectional felling and controlled directional feeling. The tree removal technique we use completely depends on the situation.

Tree Removal Basics

The tree removal specialist will begin by conducting a visual assessment of the tree. This helps identify any potential hazards that could result in injury. He will also identify the condition of the tree, its structural integrity, wind loading and location.

Tree Removal Techniques

This evaluation forms the groundwork for any risk assessment of a site and helps identify the safest route to cut down the tree.

The operator will use a scarf and back cut method.

Clear Felling

Clear felling is a technique that’s used to remove whole trees or trunks provided there are at least two tree lengths of space available in all directions from the tree’s base.

However, clear-felling is not a very commonly used technique in urban environments given the space constraints.

Here are the steps the tree removal specialist takes for clear-felling:

  1. Assess the tree to check its condition. Identify hazards if any and the presence of conditions/defects that could affect the direction of the fall, such as uneven growth, intergrowth or vines with other trees, weight distribution and shape of the crown and branches.
  2. Make sure there are no overhead electric lines or structures within the clear zone (two tree lengths) or underground services that may be damaged when the tree hits the ground.
  3. Maintain a distance of at least two tree lengths from the base of the tree.
  4. Identify at least two escape routes
  5. Use a chainsaw to safely fell the tree

Controlled Directional Felling

This tree removal process is used where the space available is less than two tree lengths. Cables or ropes are attached to the target tree and cuts are made. The line is then tensioned to bring down the tree. This can be done either using a mobile plant or using a winch and anchor point. Another option is to use a mechanical plant to push the tree in the target location.

This technique is ideal when the tree is likely to fall in the direction of an electric line, another structure or can result in an unsafe situation such as hung trees. The controlled directional felling technique is generally used in urban spaces where the presence of adjacent buildings or services makes it difficult to use the clear-felling method.

Tree Removal Techniques

Here are some of the control measures that we take when using this technique for tree removal:

  • The work is carried out by operators who are fully trained and have years of experience in the task.
  • Create exclusion zones around the tree being felled.
  • Systems such as mobile phones or two-way radios are used to establish communication between the team members
  • Use machinery to pull and push trees as necessary

Sectional Felling

As part of this tree removal technique, a tree removalist works at height using an elevated work platform (EWP) to cut the tree gradually into several sections, which are then lowered in a controlled manner.

As this process involves the use of an EWP, the team considers several things when choosing this technique including:

  • Is it safer to remove/trim the tree?
  • Are there any underground services present such as gas, water, electricity or telephone that might affect the process of setting up an EWP?
  • Can the EWP reach the desired height safely?
  • Are there any structures, obstacles or trees that pose a safety hazard when using an EWP?
  • Are there any overhead electric lines that may hinder the worker from working?
  • Should the removalist lean outside the EWP’s structure to carry out his work?
  • Will it be difficult to remove or cut the branch, limb or section of the tree due to the use of the EWP?

These are the three important tree removal techniques used by professional tree removalists. For more information or for a free quotes in the Brisbane area call Matt on 0476 150 080 or visit https://urbanarbsolutions.com.au/

Benefits of having bluestone pavers in your driveway

As humans, we all are hard-wired to compete. We want a better lifestyle, a better salary package and best of all, the best home. This is why we try really, really hard to make sure we always best each other in one way or the other.

And when it comes to having the best home in the neighborhood, the competition gets fierce like never before. We are always looking out for ways to beautify our living rooms, bedrooms, even bathrooms, and kitchen. And let’s be honest, we all love to bask under the warmth of the compliments we receive for having unique decor and impressive interiors.

But there’s one thing people tend to skimp on while making efforts while trying to have the best home amongst their neighbour’s. And that’s revamping their backyard along with the driveway.

You should know that your backyard is practically the extension of your home’s interior and personality. With this, homeowners usually take a casual, fun, and colorful approach. And let’s not forget the DIY, where homeowners use their creativity to beautify the space.

But don’t you think that it is pretty monotonous? If everyone is doing the same stuff, how can you make your home stand out in the neighbourhood?

Well, that’s what we are here for. With the help of bluestone pavers, you can exponentially elevate the beauty of your backyard right away. This is because bluestone is incredibly charming and beautiful. It falls under the category of strong and durable materials. Not to mention, it has been used for centuries to create impressive landscapes.

Read on to know more about why having bluestone pavers in your backyard is a good idea.

Impressive durability

When we are on the lookout for enhancing the beauty or functionality of our home, we are always looking for something that is durable in nature. It is definitely on the top of the priority list.

And that’s exactly what bluestone pavers offer. The dense composition and hardness make it one of the durable stones in the industry. Not to mention, its ability to withstand extreme weather conditions and the texture that adds toughness are some of the reasons why homeowners are crazy about it.

Extremely safe

Imagine slipping and breaking something in your body just because of your slippery garden pavers. Hurts. Right?

Thankfully, you don’t have to deal with that with bluestone pavers.

In fact, many homeowners decide to use bluestone pavers around the pool due to its non-slippery finish. That’s the reason why you can find these pavers in driveways, patios, and other potentially slippery areas.

Now, you wouldn’t have to worry about slipping or falling, at least not because of slippery floors.

Easy installation process

Bluestone pavers are super easy to install. Due to their flat nature, they instantly become the right fit for every floor. But it would be best to seek professional help to install those pavers and get the right look and finish.

Readily available in various styles

One of the perks of opting for bluestone pavers is that they are readily available in different styles, dimensions, and thicknesses. That’s why they are considered the perfect fit for residential as well as commercial remodeling projects.

And let’s not forget the part where you can choose your pavers in a variety of colors ranging from blue, yellow, green, grey, even purple and beautify your space right away.

All you need to do is pick the color of your choice that matches your office design, and you’ll be good to go.

Perfect for accentuating the aesthetic appeal

We can’t stress this enough that bluestone pavers are going to make your backyard and driveway look the prettiest in the neighborhood. The best part is that they end up bringing a luxurious feel to your outdoor space, making your home look more expensive than ever.

In the end,

Last but not least, these pavers are cost-effective and end up meeting your needs without burning a hole in your pocket. Not to mention it can bring in the charm to your driveway and backyard in the best way possible and make everyone else jealous of your beautiful home sweet home. That was always the plan. Right?

Do I Need an Energy Efficient Home?

Imagine living in a house that didn’t require as much energy to build or run, yet was as efficient (and in some cases even more efficient) than conventional homes. The good it would do for the environment would be phenomenal. Most climate change and environmental damage happen because of the activities involved in constructing and running an average home.

Starting from the burning of fossil fuels to warm our homes to the destruction of trees for woodwork and their use in construction. Not to mention small factors like the vehicles then used in construction that too emit and contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases all over the world.

energy efficient homes

Greenhouse gases are contributed to by many factors and activities, but 39% of all carbon emissions globally are caused by the building and construction industry alone. The fact that 28% of this comes from energy consumption and 11% comes from the construction materials themselves according to the World Green Building Council.

A Brief History

Wood was the primary (and only) source of energy for home use up until 1875. It was used for all energy production within the home. It was used to cook, to produce heat during the winter, and even for indoor lighting. Wood was practically the only source of energy for all activity within the home and as you can imagine, it wasn’t the most efficient and environmentally friendly source of energy but it’s what they had available at the time.

From 1875 until about 1950, coal was introduced as a secondary source of energy. Coal had a number of advantages over wood. One of those advantages included the fact that coal burns much longer than wood and did not need to be collected as frequently. Following the introduction of coal, came oil and gas around 1961, as fossil fuels began to gain traction during this time period.

They were and still are used primarily for cooking and space heating but from 1961 electricity was introduced. Electricity is the most cost-effective and energy-efficient source of power in homes today. It also allows for more possibilities in the utilization of power in the home as time and technology has advanced in the years since it was introduced.

Benefits of Energy-efficient Homes Over Conventional Homes

Minimizes heat loss: Energy-efficient homes are constructed in an airtight manner to prevent heat loss through cracks, air vents, and the likes. Every joint is tight and stable and all seams are finished with precision to ensure that all seams are free from all gaps.

This type of construction ensures that when you turn on the heating or air conditioning, the hot or cold air (respectively) stays trapped within the building and no energy is wasted. To add an extra layer of protection, builders use spray-foam insulation to create an effective barrier between the home and the outside world.

Reduces Utility Bills: Energy-efficient homes also employ advanced technology that is designed and engineered to use less energy. In combination with energy-efficient homes, appliances that promote energy efficiency use significantly less energy than conventional appliances.

Appliances with better energy star ratings can help you save up to 25% on electrical power (depending on the appliance) and also on water usage too. As a result, energy-efficient homes offer significantly lower utility bills from day one and these factors alone.

Reduced Incidence of Pests: Dealing with pests such as ants, rats, and termites can be very frustrating. They can also be quite expensive to deal with. The very design of energy-efficient homes greatly reduces their incidence. In more traditional homes, leaky or broken ducts enable insects to get in, particularly in the attic or basement and can cause inconvenience and damage later down the line.

Lower Negative Environmental Impact: Conventional homes have a huge effect on the environment. If you are concerned about climate change, it might be better for you to think about switching to a more energy-efficient home. An efficient building automatically consumes less electricity and water than its inefficient counterparts. Greenhouse gases are emitted a lot less and energy is saved a lot more, both in construction and in the day-to-day running of the house.

If you’ve considered incorporating a more energy-efficient lifestyle to simply lower utility costs or for the global effect that contributes to greenhouse gases causes, a great place to start is with your appliances and the small changes that can have a huge impact.

They can help in the design process and offer energy-efficient, custom homes that help you do your part with climate change and save you money in the long run. Chat to our domestic electrician today!

Sobering Tree Removal Mistakes in Victoria

Trees add to the beautification of any landscape, whether residential or commercial. These plants also play a vital role in the cycle of environmental and human health. Despite these all-important functions, unhealthy trees can become hazards. Some typical examples include pest-infested, damaged, distressed, dormant, and diseased trees. Is professional tree removal a worthwhile investment?

Not knowing the extent of tree damage can be worrying if not dangerous. Certified tree removal experts can give insight into safety, health, and environmental risks. Their education, training, expertise, and hands-on experience make them a resourceful asset. Also, they provide detailed tree safety surveys and analysis reports to support their recommendations. This paperwork can be useful when making insurance claims for disaster-related property damage.

These hired hands do meticulous planning and preparation to ensure everyone’s safety. Tree cutting involves dangerous operations that can even cause property damage. It helps to have the correct tools, gears, and equipment to make the project successful. Having a professional with technical expertise and field experience minimises error.

How much does tree removal cost?

Tree removal cost varies. In most cases, contractors consider tree size, location, safety hazards, risks, equipment needs, and client specifications. Some companies may dispatch a crew depending on the size of the property and the specialised equipment required. The cost of your tree removal will vary depending on the size and shape of the tree. Some of the most common reasons for a tree removal are:

  • Excess shedding. Some trees are high-maintenance and may become a nuisance over time. It is wise to consider getting an affordable tree removal service if the situation becomes intolerable.
  • Dead trees. Nobody wants to keep a dead tree around longer than necessary. The weakened branches or roots can give way at any time and damage property.
  • Encroaching trees. The roots of trees can sometimes cause structural damage to buildings and parked vehicles. Also, unpruned branches may obscure a scenic view or corrode nearby utility cables and power lines.
  • Diseased trees. Pests infestation is one of the primary causes of tree diseases. Unfortunately, these often go undetected for prolonged periods before anyone realizes. Early detection is crucial to stop further degradation and prevent irreversible damage. Immediate remediation should be a priority since the disease can spread to nearby trees.
  • Damaged trees. Whether this is the aftermath of harsh weather conditions, thunderstorms, violent winds, or a lightning strike, removal may be necessary. Depending on the extent of the damage, this tree will eventually deteriorate and die. For safety assurance, consider consulting a leading local tree removal expert.

Worst mistakes of not hiring a tree removal professional

These days, DIY projects have become a growing trend among property managers and homeowners alike. Despite this reality, one cannot deny that some jobs are pointless without expert intervention. One such project is tree removal. Although some small tree cutting projects are doable without an expert, consultation should be a priority.

  • Increased risk of injuries. Well-trained tree removal specialists know how to do this job without causing injuries and damaging property. Furthermore, tall trees near power lines are a safety hazard. The practical thing to do is hire an experienced, knowledgeable, trained professional to prevent unnecessary accidents.
  • High-value property damage. Besides the potential danger of being electrocuted by electrical lines, large tree cuttings can damage parts of the building. Plus, tree stump removal often proves challenging compared to other tasks. Why endure all this stress when a professional tree remover can do the job faster and prevent losses? Well-established tree removal companies provide liability coverage for some high-value damages on the job, where applicable.
  • Slow cleanup process. Professional tree removers work efficiently and quickly. Plus, these contractors use specialised equipment to reduce manual labor and maintain high efficiency. If you’re living in Victoria, Stump Boy are developing a strong reputation for their tree removal services. For an affordable tree removal in Frankston, you’re in safe hands with their arborists. They have a reputation for removing debris safely without causing further damage to you or your neighbors’ property.

Can tree removal enhance property landscape?

Well-manicured properties are an allure that commands the most sincere compliments. Why keep trees that diminish the beauty of the landscape? Professional tree removers can inspect the property and health of surrounding trees to recommend the perfect remediation. The advantage here is that a tree removal expert will provide a detailed diagnosis before starting the project. Also, these experts usually offer multiple

remediation options, including restoration of unhealthy trees where possible.

When hiring a professional tree remover, it’s imperative to:

  • Compare services. It guarantees the highest degree of professionalism, reasonable time estimates, rates, best-in-class equipment, and efficiency.
  • Get to know referrals. Honest reviews about a company can be a helpful resource when evaluating service.
  • Ask about qualifications. Reputable tree removal experts should not have a problem referencing training certificates, licensure, and relevant credentials to build customer trust. Also, it’s a crucial step to understand if the contractor can do the job well.
  • Check job safety compliance. Always choose contractors who follow recommended safety protocols, wear the correct gears and use state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Ask about liability coverage. The safest tree removers usually have insurance and demonstrate exceptional work ethic. Homeowners can rest assured that the contractor will take care of any liability.

Why Directional Drilling is Impossible without these machines

In drilling, the equipment for creating holes into rock can vary greatly. Some require directional drilling, while others are powered by power drills that must be manually operated or electric motors. The use of hands has been around for hundreds of years and has been an effective way to cut through the material because it allows a more natural feel to the process.

There are several different types of tools used in drilling, including mechanical drills, rotary drills, wedges, battery drills, Sanders, and other attachments, and battery drills that are used by military personnel. Of these, three types will be discussed here: mechanical drills, rotary drills, and electric motors.

Rotary drills are used primarily for drilling into porous materials such as masonry, concrete, limestone, and sandstone. As the name implies, they work in a circular motion rather than vertical movement, meaning that they must use longer strokes and more strokes to penetrate deeply into the material. Rotary drills require tools that have a standard drill bit.

Since there is no one particular type of tool for drilling into porous materials, there are various shapes and sizes of motors for this specific type of drill. They range from battery-powered drills to diesel-powered drills. The battery and diesel drills are also used for digging underground, although the battery version will not be as powerful as a diesel-powered drill.

While a motor uses electricity to make the drill rotate, a drill must be connected to a drill bit to work. Because of this, the drill bit must be made out of a material that can withstand the extreme vibrations of the motor being used to power it. Most drill bits are made out of stainless steel, but some of them are made out of aluminium, titanium, iron, and copper.

A drill is mounted on a platform, and then a guide rod can be used to position the hole to be drilled. This is called a drilling attachment. Using two accessories will work best.

When a hole is made, the drill goes to full revolution, which means that it starts at one end and ends at the other. As the exercise moves down into the ground, it creates more holes in the rock. Once the drilling is done, a hammer can be used to complete the hole.

The tools used in drilling will also vary with each company that does underground drilling. Different companies use different sized drills, as well as various types of drills. Depending on the need, there will be different types of tools used.

It is essential to know the specifications for different size drills. For example, a smaller hole can take a more significant diameter drill bit than a giant ditch, so some companies may be using a bore size of 1.5 inches, while others are drilling holes of a much larger diameter. The general rule of thumb is that the larger the hole, the larger the drill bit needs to be, and vice versa.

Some of the tools that are required for drilling include such things as jigs, motors, hands, mounting devices, line-lock, air compressors, power drills, drill bits, and other related tools. When all of these tools are needed for underground drilling, the amount of drilling will depend on the size of the hole and the equipment needed.

Drill bits for hand-drilled holes will need to be deeper and more robust. This is because there will be very little friction when drilling, and a hard-hitting drill bit will be necessary. Most drilling will require digging into concrete, and drilling into masonry, but drilling into sandstone is common as well. Hardstone can often snap the head of the drill due to the amount of heat created during the drilling process which weakens the metal. Keeping a second backup drill will prevent costly downtime while construction equipment repairs the broken machinery.

There are many varied types of drilling machines, and the types of drilling equipment are regularly changing. Every type of drilling will require a different kind of drill bit, and the type of drill bit that is needed will depend on the kind of hole that is being drilled. Digging can be done by using manual labour, by electric motors, by high-powered diesel-powered drills, or drills powered by battery power, and by surface drilling.

Waterwatch Adelaide

Waterwatch is a water quality monitoring initiative established in 1992 through which people in the community are actively involved in monitoring the health of local waterways and catchments.

In the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges region, Waterwatch was run by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board through the NRM Education program.

The Waterwatch program in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges region has now been replaced by the Engaging with Nature program, which expands upon the water monitoring activities to also include terrestrial monitoring and taking action components.

This website is currently only being maintained as a warehouse for the large range of historical resources that were developed to support the Waterwatch program. The Importance Of Wetlands

Wetlands are among the most important and productive ecosystems on Earth, providing habitat, water and an abundant food source for a diverse range of animals including birds, frogs, invertebrates and fish. Wetlands become refuge areas for plants and animals in times of drought and are nurseries for fish and migratory bird populations. As water travels slowly through a wetland, a number of different processes occur which help to improve water quality and the overall health of a catchment area.

In the past, most wetlands were viewed as wastelands and were often reclaimed for farming, housing and other land uses. Today we understand the vital functions of wetlands and better appreciate their environmental, social and economic value and significance. Governments and communities all over the world are involved in wetland management, conservation, restoration and construction projects.
Wetland environments have a variety of important functions in natural and urban areas including:

Wildlife supportapexisland
Water detention
Improving water quality
Flood control
Erosion control
Groundwater aquifer recharge
Coastal buffer zones
Natural fire breaks
Cultural significance

Significant Wetlands in South Australia

The Australian Conservation Council, in collaboration with Commonwealth and State Governments, created A Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia (1993). Of the 520 nationally important sites, 43 were in South Australia . By 2001 the directory expanded to recognise 851 wetlands, with 69 of those in South Australia . Other wetlands are being identified and added to the directory. To view sites or find out more go to: www.deh.gov.au/water/wetlands/database/index.html

In South Australia , the Department for Environment and Heritage and the Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation have developed the Wetland Strategy for South Australia (2003), which ‘provides a framework for promoting the health, diversity and productivity of our wetlands into the future.’ To find out more go to: www.environment.sa.gov.au/biodiversity/pdfs/wetlands/wetlands_strategy.pdf
Significant Wetlands around the World

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an international treaty adopted in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. Its broad aims are ‘to halt the worldwide loss of wetlands and to conserve, through wise use and management, those that remain’. There are currently 1369 wetlands around the world, protected by the Ramsar convention, and more are being added. To find out more about Ramsar sites in South Australia and worldwide go to: www.ramsar.org/

What is an aquatic macroinvertebrate?

Aquatic + Macro + Invertebrate = Aquatic Macroinvertebrate

Aquatic is another word for water. The macroinvertebrates in this section are the ones that spend some or all of their lives in fresh water. Macro means they are big enough to see with your eyes, and an invertebrate is an animal without a backbone. Some are soft and squishy, some have a hard skeleton on the outside of their body and others live in shells!

Aquatic macroinvertebrates range from insects and crustaceans to molluscs and worms, and are a vital part of the food chain in aquatic and terrestrial environments. They help to break down leaves, bark and twigs that fall into the water, and can even change their environments by moving soil, sand or pebbles around. Scientists can use the number and types of aquatic macroinvertebrates in a waterway to determine how healthy it is.
